On 2 May 1863 at 9:00 P.M., while Lt. Gen. Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson was

reconnoitering with members of his staff, Jackson was accidentally fired upon by his own

troops. The 18th NC Infantry Regiment was responsible for the "friendly fire" incident.

Jackson was struck by three .57 caliber bullets. He was taken to a field hospital near the

battlefield, where his left arm was amputated. Sgt. Darius Bright Watson, Co. D, 18th NC

Infantry Regiment, CSA, caught Jackson's horse that he had been riding when he was

shot. On 10 May 1863 at 3:15 P.M., Stonewall Jackson died. His last words were "Let us

cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees." Sgt. Darius Bright Watson was

laid to rest in Green Sea Cemetery, Horry County, SC.

hard to reach area off Carolina Road. It is between Little Bethel Road in SC and Carolina Trace

in NC. Cemetery is located in a Westerly direction from the farm pond. No burials have taken

place there in several years. Many graves are unmarked. A person living near the cemetery

said he knew Mr. Strickland had 25 children buried there. It is located near Tabor City, NC just

inside the State Line of SC.

entrance of the Church's parking lot; drive past the church and behind the fellowship building.

Take the old dirt road about a 1/4 mile down along the edge of the field. The cemetery is straight

ahead. The open space on the left of the cemetery contains many unidentified graves. (1-*+)
